End of October

I more or less started my maternity leave from work, and it's been quite nice and relaxing. It's also a huge adjustment from my usual hectic schedule, but such a welcome change. I'm just waiting for bebe to arrive, and preparing as much as I can by reading and making lists of things I still need to do. In late pregnancy there's this thing called nesting, where expecting mothers feel the urge to clean and prepare the house, but it hasn't really hit me- I'm either too tired or too lazy to scrub everything, but I'm sort of hoping it does hit me soon!

We were extremely lucky to receive so many baby items from family and friends (in Japan and Canada!), and we have pretty much everything we need. I heard newborns don't need much and I like how in Japan they keep material possessions to a minimum due to space constraints. It feels a lot healthier, I couldn't imagine having to purchase long lists of things that are not necessary, even though I love shopping in general. Baby stuff is very, very cute in Japan, but also practical so I'll stick to that part.

I've been baking a lot, it's something I've missed and it's comforting and warming, especially with the colder temperatures. I made granola bars and next I'll make apple muffins. I also like to experiment with fruit smoothies, and I'm all about hearty breakfasts like oatmeal pancakes since I don't have to rush. I like to take long walks and keep as active as I can, but some days I just feel so tired- every day is so different. I have to slow down, but it's impossible. I also have insomnia, no matter what time I go to bed I never seem to fall asleep before 4 or 5am. It's a combination of excitement and anticipation (and trying to find a comfortable position!).

I feel so lucky I have all this time to enjoy autumn and those gorgeous days. I also feel lucky I'm giving birth in Japan, the level of care I've experienced here is far superior to what I would get back home, despite how strict Japanese doctors can be about weight gain- I had to learn to just smile and nod.

However, I recently found out how difficult it can be for Japanese women to keep their careers while raising children- the system makes it pretty much impossible to do so (nursery and daycare shortage, unpaid maternity leave or simply not welcomed to return to their company) and now I understand why so many women in Japan are forced to become housewives. It's not the worst thing in life, but it's sad if you love your job. Thankfully things are slowly changing, but I think it will take several years before it catches up with some other countries. My case is a bit different, being non-Japanese and working part-time/freelance (and being welcomed back).

In other news, this weekend is Halloween. I haven't celebrated for a few years (I do recall some cat ears and black tights about three years ago, and a kid-sized tutu and a horrible tasting chu-hai four years ago), but I do like costume-watching. I was just passing through Shibuya tonight and people go all out with their costumes.

I also know that Sunday morning will bring Christmas decorations and carols, a magical overnight transformation. I don't mind Christmas so much this year as we'll be celebrating as a family of three!

Looking beautiful~

I'm so excited for you. My husband and I have been talking a lot more about starting a family, and we are excited to do so, but I am struggling with the reaction I got with work. I am on the JET Program, and our contracts are yearly, with 6 weeks unpaid maternity leave granted after a baby. But after I got married, my supervisor and boss as Japanese-politely as possible asked me not to get pregnant because they couldn't replace me, they need me to do my job. They were more shocked than welcome when I announced me engagement, upset I didn't wait for their approval to sign the marriage paperwork, and now the pressure not to have a baby from them and the urge to start my family is really tearing me up. I understand their position, I am irreplaceable should I be unavailable. But is putting my life on hold for them the right thing to do?

Wow I didn't mean to go on about my problems, I apologize! I just don't really have anyone to talk about this besides my husband, who says I shouldn't worry, if I get pregnant, no one will have the balls to say anything other than congrats. He hasn't met my supervisor though.

Can't wait to hear about your bebe joining us on the outside though~ Take care!

Thanks for your comment! I think you definitely should get pregnant if you want to! You are not irreplaceable (well they wouldn't find someone as good but you know what I mean) and they will cope... Seriously! I used to think like that, my career always came first and having a baby was not in my plans, even in my early to mid-thirties. Thankfully I was blessed with a surprise and I couldn't be happier. I was worried about my career, but now I realize raising a family is just as important and I'm so glad I can experience this. My best advice would be to never put off starting a family!! I wish I started sooner, I want to have more babies already!! Good luck :)

I's so excited for you! I remember my last weeks of pregnancy being filled with the excitement and nervousness of the unknown. Having to wait to meet your little one is the hardest part!

I'm really surprised about your comments about the returning to work in Japan after having a child! I have quite the opposite feelings! Maybe because I'm from the US where things are dismal for women having children, but I am overjoyed at how well taken care of my son and I are. I'm an currently on a paid maternity leave that will last until the day my son turns one. On top of being paid a large portion of my salary, I'm also exempt from paying my pension and health insurance while still receiving benefits. Also, there are monthly payments made by the government to help with the cost of raising him. I'm shocked by all that we've been given---especially as my husband and I are both non-citizen foreigners living here in Japan.

Lizzie,
You're lucky!! Your company must be very good, I never heard of that with my Japanese friends in Tokyo. I think also Tokyo is overpopulated and it's impossible to get a spot in a nursery until the child is 2 or 3- a few friends of mine just quit their jobs due to that :( My case is a bit different, I'm freelance so I can go back anytime but I'll have to find an arrangement for my baby, probably a nanny. Other than that the care is great, especially the hospital, but I can see why the birth rate is low in Japan! Enjoy the rest of your maternity leave, sounds so lovely!!
